Eating Disorders & Mental Health

"It's never too late to be who you might have been."

~George Eliot~

So some days, it may feel like we can't do this whole recovery thing.

Brene Brown: The Power of Vulnerability

I compiled a list a videos of what I hope, may help.
I have added videos that offer general advice on eating disorders and managing other mental health issues.

I found these two videos on "Why Recover?" - click here for part one

If you need some inspiration and hope for recovery, watch the following that you think may help.

But first, I ask you to watch this:

In recovery, is is so important that we allow ourselves to find a voice.

Finding a voice - Part One

The following videos are especially connected to eating disorder recovery and struggles.

Health Behavioural Model for Change:

A six week rota which hopes to identify a health behavioural model for change.

We have tried to use the model, and connect it directly to eating disorder recovery.
My hope for these videos, is to reach those who are new to recovery and understanding their disease, but to also connect to those, who may be stuck or fearful of moving forward.
I hope I can allow the viewers to see, that we can move forward, regardless of how dire things are, or if we have relapsed again, or if we have little if any insight into our disorder, as of yet.
Please believe me when I say, anyone can recover.

Managing difficult feelings:

How to face those food fears when you are trying to recover.

Managing Feelings when confronting your eating disorder.

Self Esteem - Part One and Part Two.

Recovery, spare time and distraction:

Recovery and spare time - Part One and Part Two.

Eating disorders and body issues:

Media, size and body image - Part One and Part Two

Getting help:

Getting help - where to find it!

The role of different therapists and different therapies - Part One and Part Two

Parents and teens with eating disorders (also discussed are those who are no longer teens but still live at home)

The Recovery Process:

Being told - "You won't recover!"

Alongside this I thought I would link to some videos surrounding eating disorders and other mental health issues...

EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified)-

Eating disorder encouragement:

I invite you to take a look around at the following:

V-Day is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sex slavery.

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, Any One Of Us: Words From Prison, screenings of V-Day's documentary Until The Violence Stops, and the PBS documentary What I Want My Words To Do To You, Spotlight Teach-Ins and V-Men workshops, to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. In 2010, over 5,400 V-Day benefit events took place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls.

The goal of the Operation Beautiful website is to end negative self-talk or “Fat Talk.” If this little blog only does one productive thing, I hope it helps readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is — it hurts you emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Through my own experiences fighting Fat Talk, I’ve realized the power behind an anonymous act such as Operation Beautiful. When I post a note, I’m saying, “I CHOOSE to be positive!”

I began Operation Beautiful by leaving positive messages on the mirrors of public restrooms — at work, at the gym, at the grocery store. I scribble down whatever comes to mind — "You are beautiful!" or "You are amazing just the way you are!" My personal goal is to leave as many Operation Beautiful notes as I can. Maybe some people read them and just smile, but I bet some people are truly touched by the effort of a random stranger.

Actively Arielle: A Voice with a Commitment

Wonderful words. Wonderful heart.
"I am a woman with a story, a voice, and a commitment..."

Overcoming Eating Disorders Project is a project in which during 2011, I will be in contact with people who have suffered with an Eating Disorder who are comfortable enough to show the public how far they have come in beating their disorder.

The whole point of this project is that everyone knows someone who has had an Eating Disorder, or worse is going through one at this moment. It affects millions of families around the world and the problem only seems to be getting worse and worse.

'Men Get Eating Disorders Too' is a charitable organisation that seeks to raise awareness of eating disorder in men so that men can seek support. Our website provides people with information and the chance to give and receive peer support.

We welcome the fashion industry’s engagement in the All Walks campaign. We have been delighted with the energy, enthusiasm and dedication that so many people have already given to this project. We know that fashion doesn’t directly cause eating disorders – they are much more complex than that. Through our dialogue with the fashion world, we want to make this point clearly. Young people are inspired by fashion and influenced by its ideals. By offering up these wonderful images of diverse beauty, we know that fashion’s influence beyond the catwalk can be seen as a positive force in young people’s lives.”
